Sky outside the Holocaust Memorial, Ile de la Cité, Paris, 2000

When I happened to be in Paris a few months later, I visited the Memorial to the Holocaust, near Notre Dame. It was early spring and the sky was fabulously clear and sunny. Walking back up the steps that lead from the memorial to street level, I looked up and was amazed to see the entire sky covered with words, formed by a small plane which had disappeared from view. Many of the words had dispersed but I managed to take some photographs all the same, the image of the word ‘CIEL’ coming out well. I liked the idea of writing ‘sky’ on the sky itself and eventually used the picture in a work for CERN.
