Extract from the book: Arriving in Dublin mid-morning, it was overcast and raining. I caught the bus to the city centre, dumped my bags and headed off up to Dunsink. The taxi driver had never heard of the place but seemed interested all the same. Dropping me by the locked iron gates, he was concerned that there was someone to meet me as the entrance was deserted and a little bleak, almost forbidding. The site is on the edges of the city, adjacent to an old rubbish tip and just down the road from a community of travellers who, I later learned, were in dispute with the local council. It seems the land in the vicinity is ripe for possible development. The taxi driver told me that Dunsink Lane was blocked with slabs of concrete half way along to stop people racing up and down in cars. |
